Although the southern coastline of Wales is densely populated with a number of major cities, you
don’t have to head far north to start seeing lush countryside, and there are three rivers within an
hour drive of the capital that offer stunning paddling to beginners and intermediate paddlers.
Weaving its way through Brecon and beyond, the river Usk offers stunning paddling, with a very
rural setting. With a number of sections to suit any ability of paddler and whether you kayak, canoe
or Stand Up Paddle board, there is a section for you.
The upper sections provide exciting rapids for those seeking excitement, with some of the lower
sections offering a more relaxed pace. There are access agreements associated with the Usk, so do
have a look online to see when is best to hit the water!
From the moors to the ocean, this river is a blast! Not too far out of Neath, is a rollercoaster of a
river that carves its way through a small valley. The excitement starts on the moors with steep slides
and powerful rapids, this section along with the gorge below and middle section is for experienced
paddlers only with a number challenging rapids that make this river a real favourite.
The lower sections of the Tawe offer a much more mellow experience for paddlers and eventually
becomes tidal as it makes its way into the ocean.
My passion for paddle sports began on the Wye, and this is the story for many others. Beginning in
Mid Wales, the Wye travels across Wales and into England before flowing back into Wales to join the
river Severn.
This long river is another that has something to offer for everyone. The upper sections that flow
through Rhayader are popular with thrill seekers as it has a number of exciting rapids for
experienced paddlers. From here the river is mostly calm with a few exceptions along the way, the
most popular stretches being from Hay-on-wye and Monmouth. The scenery is stunning, travelling
through picturesque farm land, rolling hills and riverside villages and towns. Kayak, SUP or Canoe,
the Wye has something for you!
Every river is different so be sure to do your research before heading out on any adventure, ensuring
conditions are right and you have the knowledge and equipment to safely enjoy the water.
